Local Flavor – Cookbook
Federal Point Historic Preservation Society

Editors: Rebecca Taylor, Darlene Bright, Cheri McNeill, Daniel Ray Norris

Food is one of the cornerstones of culture. It says everything about a place and the people who live there.  It is the past, present, and the future of a community as defined by it history, natural resources and economy.

The old saying – “You are what you eat” can be turned around to more properly state – “You eat what you are.”

We are food that is steeped in Civil War history, Depression era conservativeness, fresh seafood from our coast and Cape Fear River.  Carnival food from our boardwalk and a myriad of restaurants represent cuisines brought from other places. Folks making our area their place to retire bring with them their favorite recipes. Of all places in the state, we represent a very wide spectrum of the food continuum.  We are a melting pot in more ways than one.

Food is also comfort, it not only nourishes but it knits groups of people together.  Gatherings in the South, and really just about anyplace result in the sharing of food.  These gatherings cement bonds between those who eat together, creating intimate and lasting relationships.

Oyster roasts, pot lucks, fish frys, chowder cook offs, pig pickings and all the other various organized food events keep our lives focused on food.  We are bound by food and defined by food.  Obsessed by food?

You know … I think it’s just about time to eat.
You hungry?
