Skip Henson - FP Front DoorWe are so proud and lucky to have Charles “Skip” Henson as a Business Member! He is charming and friendly beyond belief as it is but, for the past two months, Skip has tackled the job of refreshing our History Center.

He has pressure washed it and applied sealants to it. I actually thought it had all been re-stained the first time I saw it after he pressure washed it. Skip is a thorough, professional house and business painter. What he has done for us reallySkip on roof cropped gives us all renewed pride in our Society and our History Center.

Skip, on behalf of every single member of the Federal Point Historic Preservation Society and the community of Carolina Beach where our History Center is located…THANK YOU!!!!

Coastal K-9 Bakery

Coastal K-9 Bakery LogoHow could we speak of history without thinking now and then of the beloved pets which accompanied all the historic events and persons throughout? Even though the pets of those we revere and read about may not be mentioned, we know they must have existed. In fact, there is a very good story of one famous pooch who accompanied every single successful running of the Civil War blockade off Cape Fear with his master and then sailed off with him after the war.

Flash forward to today and we find that our pets are still loved and are treated as family. See one Ms. Jackie Oakes. She owns Coastal K-9 Bakery. That’s a bakery dedicated to baking needs for dogs, including beautiful cakes for all occasions, treats, and foods. She bakes them with eye appeal as well as mouthwatering aromas and they are even gluten-free.

gluten freeStop in and look around and you will see things that you never thought possible for your pet. You won’t leave empty handed and when you visit, please tell them that you much appreciate their support as a Business Member of the Federal Point History Center. They provide a very much needed and fun service for us all and we are very proud to include them on our Business Members Banner.

Here’s how to find them. They are located on Carolina Beach Road just south of Strickland’s Supply (Air Force Jet parked there) in Potter’s Square.

We are giving a very proud shout-out this month to the Historical Society of Topsail Island, a sister historic society located on Topsail Island. The opening of their museum goes back to April of 1997. Their location has an even grander story to tell. Their museum used to house a TOP-SECRET missile program through the U.S. Navy.

Their museum, known as the Assembly Building, had been the research and testing site for Operation Bumblebee, the top secret missile program operated by the Navy on Topsail Island from 1946-1948. In July of 1992, through the efforts of the Topsail Beach Economic Development Council and other citizens, the Assembly Building was designated a Historical Site on the National Register of Historic Places.

Assembly BuldingThe Historical Society of Topsail Island has so much to offer that we just do not have room here to list it all. It is a full service organization offering festival activities, educational programs, building rental opportunities, and there are even boat slips offered to rent.

They have over 380 members and membership rates are very reasonable. An amazing amount of interest and fun is offered through this much-storied Society. Please look at their website, and the next time you find yourself on Topsail Island, drop in and let them know that you are members of Federal Point Historic Preservation Society and that we really appreciate their support.

The History Center is very happy to announce that Brush Dental Care located on Barrier Road, Carolina Beach have become Business Members.

I have been to this office since they opened with Dr. Timothy Swing six years ago. Everyone in the office greets you like neighbors. The office is very conveniently located near shopping and has convenient parking.

What I am seeing more and more of on Pleasure Island is proof that we really are neighbors. And we are working together. Dr. Swing is currently renovating his home. Last visit he was excited telling that he hopes to himself that they turn up something historic and exciting when a wall is worked on. People like this remind us that we are a community living and working together. timthumbNow that excites me!

‘Our mission is to provide comprehensive, compassionate dental care to patients of all backgrounds. We pledge to be honest with our patients and never recommend unnecessary procedures. We value our employees and vow to provide them opportunities for rewarding careers. Brush Dental Care is also committed to improving the communities in which we live and work.’

Thank you again Dr. Swing for becoming a sponsoring member, we appreciate you and your staff

Ned Barnes Attorney at Law

Ned Barnes officeFeatured Business Member

By Tony (Lem) Phillips

How often can you honestly say that you have just enjoyed speaking with a lawyer? Well, I have just come from the office of local real estate lawyer, Ned Barnes, and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit! Ned Barnes and his law firm has been a Business Member of Federal Point History Center for several years and it is due time to recognize him and his office for their support.

What really makes the monthly task of writing this article for the History Center a labor of love is meeting someone with so much love and enthusiasm for this island. From one end of the Island to the other, Ned Barnes spoke with glowing words about our home, Federal Point, NC. He renewed my “Pride of Home” just listening to him.

Ned worked for a Charlotte, NC firm early in his career. He was sent here in 1984 to work with projects that became Ocean Dunes, Otter Creek and many more. He fell in love with the community and the people who live here. When the Charlotte firm dissolved, Ned stayed here with his wife whom he met at Fort Macon, NC. Thirty years later, Ned and his family are true Islanders from heart to toes. Ned’s son Mitchell Barnes is set to graduate soon and continue the business. Daughter Drew Barnes works hard in New York City as a Social Worker.

When things die down around here, as they do in winter months, Ned and his family will be hiking trails like the Carolina Beach State Park trail to Sugar Loaf Dune. If you expect to speak with Ned during his lunch hour, you will have to speak up for Ned walks three miles on the beach every day at lunch. If it is after hours, look for him enjoying the sunset from home.Ned Barnes staff

Whether you need advice about property or, just need to speak with a lawyer who is local that you can depend on, call Ned Barnes. Anyone who loves our Island as much as he does is someone you will benefit from simply by knowing.

Thank you Ned Barnes, for your years of continued support for the Federal Point History Center! We are very proud to have you and your staff as our Business Member of the month!

Carolina Marine Terminal

Featured Business Member

By Tony (Lem) PhillipsCarolina Marine Terminal

When the Federal Point History Center welcomes a new Business Member or simply salutes a long standing member, we usually speak with pride of a small enterprise or local shop serving the public with fine fares or needed services. But what about when the Business Member operates on equipment loaded with 30,000 to 50,000 TONS of product moved in a DAY?

Carolina Marine Terminal located at 3330 River Road in Wilmington, NC handles cargo from ships that cost $20,000 per day so they have to do it fast and they have to do it right the first time. They have an ingenious conveyor design that takes product from the ship and moves it rapidly. This system works along side a crane that can move 1,000 tons of bulk in an hour. They can get a truck in and out in 15 minutes from the time it hits the scales.

craneMike McCarley and Kevin Walker first ventured into business in the 1970’s and they have seriously impacted the local material handling business. There is no more of a state of the art system in our area and our hats are off to these adventurous gentlemen who have made this business such a huge success for them as well as for Wilmington.

Please welcome the Carolina Marine Terminal as a very welcomed Business Members of the Federal Point History Center!! We are very proud and we are very impressed.
