The Federal Point Historic Preservation Society will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, August 17, 7:30 pm at the Federal Point History Center, 1121-A North Lake Park Blvd., adjacent to Carolina Beach Town Hall.
Our speaker this month will be Captain Dennis Barbour, owner of Island True Value Tackle & Hardware and the Island Marina in Carolina Beach.
In our continuing exploration of the environmental issues of our local inlets he will talk as a representative of the North Carolina Beach Inlet, and Waterway Association, an organization that works on behalf of North Carolina’s Coast and those who love it by encouraging government action and funding, educate and advocate for effective federal and state policy and facilitate environmentally sound scientific and engineering solutions for NC’s threatened beaches, inlets and waterways.
For four decades Dennis has served in many professional and public capacities and has a family history of construction, maintenance and operation of coastal marinas in Carolina Beach.
He has served as secretary for the New Hanover County Fishing Club, Tournament Director for the East Coast Got Em On King Mackerel Classic at Carolina Beach, and the Congressional Committee appointed by Mike McIntyre to evaluate the economic value for maintaining North Carolina’s Shallow Draft Inlets.
Dennis also served on the Carolina Beach Town Council as Mayor Pro-Tem for 6 years and as Mayor for 2 years. While on the council he represented the Town as a member on the New Hanover Tourism Development Authority, New Hanover County Port, Waterway and Beach Commission, and North Carolina Beach, Inlet & Waterway Association.
Dennis continues to remain active in the community and state by serving in the following capacities, and regularly speaks to organizations and NC legislatures throughout North Carolina about NC Water Resource Projects and Programs.

Dennis spends a great deal of his time in and around the coastal waters of North Carolina and through his water related businesses diligently educates the public on rules, regulations and the role they play on protecting our water resources for future generations.
